Signs you need this

  • Black or dark green patches on drywall, wood or ceilings
  • Spots that come back after you wipe them
  • Black staining around a past leak
  • A musty smell along with the spots

Colour doesn’t tell you the type

“Black mould” is what most people call any dark mould. But many different moulds look black or dark green, and you can’t tell which one you have by looking at it. A lab can identify the type, but for removal it doesn’t matter. Mould growing inside your home should be removed properly, whatever its colour.

What does matter is how much there is, what it’s growing on, and why it’s wet.

Health

Mould can cause problems such as asthma flare-ups, stuffy nose and eye irritation. If you have health concerns, talk to your doctor. We don’t give medical advice. We remove the mould and the conditions it needs.

Safe removal

The worst thing you can do with a large patch of mould is scrub it or tear it out with no containment. That spreads spores through the house. Here’s how we do it:

  1. Contain the work area with plastic barriers and negative air.
  2. Remove mouldy drywall, insulation, carpet or trim, and bag it inside the containment.
  3. Clean remaining surfaces with HEPA vacuums and cleaning.
  4. Clearance test to confirm the area is clean.
  5. Fix the moisture, the leak, condensation or humidity that let it grow.

Spraying it with bleach doesn’t count. Alberta Health Services says biocide-only treatment like bleach isn’t acceptable remediation. See why bleach doesn’t fix mould.

Asbestos in older homes

In older Edmonton homes, the drywall, flooring or insulation we’d remove may contain asbestos. If we suspect it, licensed abatement professionals test and remove it before mould work goes ahead. Our crews don’t do asbestos abatement.

Where did the moisture come from?

Black mould after a leak or flood means the area stayed wet too long. If there’s still active water, Water Damage Edmonton handles water removal and drying first.

Our process

  1. Inspect

We check how far it goes, including behind surfaces, and find the moisture source.

  2. Contain

The area is sealed off under negative air so spores don't spread when materials are disturbed.

  3. Remove and clean

Mouldy materials are removed and bagged, and surfaces HEPA vacuumed and cleaned.

  4. Verify and fix

Clearance testing confirms it worked, and the moisture source is fixed.

What it costs

About $500 for a small contained area to $6,000+ for large or hidden growth

Typical Central Alberta range. Final price confirmed after inspection.

Questions people ask

Is black mould more dangerous than other mould?

You can't tell the type of mould by its colour. Many kinds of mould look black or dark green. Treat any mould growing indoors the same way. Remove it properly and fix the moisture.

Should I test it to see if it's toxic?

Testing can identify the type, but the removal method doesn't change. Testing is most useful when you need proof for a landlord, buyer or inspector, or to confirm the job worked.

Can I clean black mould (or mold) myself?

Small surface spots on hard surfaces, yes, with soap and water and gloves. Health Canada says up to three small patches, less than about 10 square feet (1 m²) in total, you can clean yourself. A single patch larger than about 32 square feet (3 m²) should be assessed and cleaned by a qualified professional.

Will bleach kill it?

Bleach isn't a fix. Alberta Health Services says treating mould with only a biocide or disinfectant such as bleach is not acceptable remediation.
