Many of the St. Albert calls we expect are about winter condensation: windows that run with water every cold morning, black spots on sills and frames, and bathroom ceilings that never quite dry. We also remove mould from basements, attics and anywhere a leak has been.
Winter condensation and mould
Mould grows indoors where there’s high humidity or condensation. In winter, the glass, frames and outside walls of a St. Albert home get cold. Warm, moist air from cooking, showers and breathing hits those cold surfaces and turns to water. Day after day, that water soaks sills, trim and the drywall below, and mould follows.
Ways to cut it down:
- Run bathroom fans during showers and for a while after.
- Use the range hood when cooking.
- Keep blinds and curtains open a little so air reaches the glass.
- Wipe condensation off the glass and sills each morning.
When it’s a job for us
Small surface spots on glass, tile or painted trim you can often clean yourself with soap and water. Health Canada says up to three small patches, less than about 10 square feet (1 m²) in total, you can clean yourself. A single patch larger than about 32 square feet (3 m²) should be assessed and cleaned by a qualified professional. Call us too if the mould is in drywall, keeps coming back, or comes with a musty smell you can’t place. Our guide can I clean mould myself? has the details.
How we do it
We contain the area, remove mouldy drywall, trim or caulking, HEPA clean the surfaces, and test that it worked. Bleach alone isn’t remediation: Alberta Health Services says biocide-only treatment is not acceptable. Then we tackle the moisture source so it doesn’t come back.
If older materials we’d remove might contain asbestos, licensed abatement professionals test and remove it first. Our crews don’t do abatement.

Questions people ask
Why do my St. Albert windows grow mould every winter?
Warm, humid indoor air condenses on cold glass and frames. The water runs onto the sill and feeds mould. Lowering humidity and improving air movement over the windows helps.
