- ✓ Serving Edmonton and area
A finished basement that smells musty is one of the most common reasons Spruce Grove homeowners would call us. Drywall, carpet and framed walls can hide mould that started after a small leak or a past flood. We find it, remove it properly, and stop the moisture that caused it.
Where basement mould hides
- Behind drywall on outside walls, where cold concrete meets warm indoor air.
- Under carpet and underpad, especially near the floor drain or laundry.
- Inside walls around plumbing, the water heater or a bathroom.
- On stored items, like boxes and fabric kept against the foundation.
Mould grows where there are leaks, high humidity or condensation. In a basement, any of the three can be at work.
Finding it without tearing everything out
We start with moisture readings across walls and floors. Damp areas point to where mould is likely. If there’s a smell but nothing to see, air sampling can show whether there’s a hidden source. Only then do we open walls, and only where needed.
Removing it
The area is sealed off under negative air. Mouldy drywall, insulation, carpet and underpad come out and are bagged. The remaining structure is HEPA vacuumed and cleaned, then clearance tested. Spraying bleach doesn’t count: Alberta Health Services says biocide-only treatment isn’t acceptable remediation.
If the drywall or flooring might contain asbestos, licensed abatement professionals test and remove it before our work. Our crews don’t do abatement.
Stopping it coming back
The mould will come back unless the moisture stops. If water is coming through the foundation, Edmonton Crack Repair seals foundation cracks. If you’ve got standing water now, Water Damage Edmonton handles drying first.

Questions people ask
My basement smells musty but I can't see mould. What now?
Mould can hide behind drywall, under carpet or inside a wall cavity. An inspection with moisture readings, and air testing if needed, can find it.
Do I need to remove all my basement drywall?
Usually not. We remove the affected sections plus a margin, based on moisture readings.
