Is it mould?

  • A musty smell, especially in the basement or a closet
  • Black, green or white spots on walls, ceilings, wood or grout
  • Stains or bubbling paint after a leak
  • Condensation running down windows on cold mornings
  • Allergy-like symptoms at home, such as a stuffy nose, eye irritation or asthma flare-ups

Our process

  1. Inspect and find the moisture source

Mould needs moisture. We find the leak, humidity or condensation feeding it.

  2. Contain the area

Plastic barriers and negative air keep spores from spreading through the house.

  3. Remove contaminated materials

Mouldy drywall, insulation, carpet and trim are cut out and bagged.

  4. HEPA clean

Remaining surfaces are HEPA vacuumed and cleaned.

  5. Clearance testing

Testing confirms the area is clean before it is closed up.

  6. Fix the cause

Ventilation, sealing or a leak repair, so the mould does not come back.

Why bleach alone isn't enough

Bleach can make mould look like it's gone. But Alberta Health Services' fungal air testing protocol says treatment with only a biocide or disinfectant, such as bleach, is not acceptable remediation. Contaminated materials have to be removed and surfaces cleaned, with clearance testing after. Read why.

Landlords and property managers

Alberta Health Services inspectors issue orders on mouldy rental housing that require a qualified mould remediation company or consultant, plus written reports. We remediate to the AHS standard, do clearance testing, and give you the written reports, scheduled around your tenants.

Questions people ask

Can I clean mould myself?

Small surface spots on hard surfaces, usually yes, with soap and water and gloves. Health Canada says up to three small patches, less than about 10 square feet (1 m²) in total, you can clean yourself. A single patch larger than about 32 square feet (3 m²) should be assessed and cleaned by a qualified professional.

Does bleach kill mould?

Bleach can lighten a stain, but Alberta Health Services says treatment with only a biocide or disinfectant such as bleach is not acceptable remediation. Contaminated materials must be removed.

Is black mould (or mold) more dangerous?

You can't tell the type of mould from its colour. Mould can cause problems such as asthma flare-ups, stuffy nose and eye irritation. Treat any indoor mould seriously and fix the moisture.

How much does mould removal cost?

Most residential mould remediation in Central Alberta runs from about $500 for a small contained area to $6,000+ for large or hidden contamination. Attic jobs in Canada generally run $2,500 to $6,000.
